چکیده

ing away from the effect of the phonological rules mentioned, the template of Nicobarese reduplication is a syllable PuC. A standard copyand-association analysis involving a prespecified CVC template will have to somehow insure that the coda segment in a form like cim ends up in coda position. Since prelinked segments, if used at all, must be interpreted conditionally, we are faced with the choice of derivations shown below: (79) c i m c i m c i m c i m [X [X XI] [X [X X]] [X [X XI] [X [X X]I I I I I u ? u output: rnum-cim output: *Ac-cim In the right-hand derivation association proceeds left-to-right. Since the initial c of cim cannot link up to the first C of the prefix, it is expected that it will continue to search for an eligible C position: but when the empty C is found, we get *Puc-cim (surface *Pc-cim) instead of Pum-cim. The correct result is achieved in the left-hand derivation, where association proceeds right-to-left. The problem here is that we have derived the right form at the cost of reversing the expected direction of association: left-to-

Loanwords as Pseudo-compounds in Malagasy

Reduplication in Malagasy copies a two-mora-long section of the base (e.g., alíka ‘dog’ → alìkalíka ‘something like a dog’). Although the reduplicant is usually left-anchored to the main-stress syllable, there are two types of words in the language that place the reduplicant elsewhere (anchored to secondary stress): finally-stressed loanwords, and native compounds. I argue that loanwords behave...

Integrity and Correspondence in Manam Double Reduplication

0. Introduction In this paper I argue that the nature of apparent haplology in Manam foot redupli-cation supports two claims: (1) a. Stems of the type ¡ ¢ £ ¢ £ , ending in two identical syllables, are underlyingly a shorter stem (i.e. /rago/) with lexicalized reduplication of a syllable. b. Words with multiple reduplication are analyzed with a single set of correspondence indices, so that more...

Learning multiple rules simultaneously: Affixes are more salient than reduplications

Language learners encounter numerous opportunities to learn regularities, but need to decide which of these regularities to learn, because some are not productive in their native language. Here, we present an account of rule learning based on perceptual and memory primitives (Endress, Dehaene-Lambertz, & Mehler, Cognition, 105(3), 577-614, 2007; Endress, Nespor, & Mehler, Trends in Cognitive Sc...

Is there Floating Tone in Taiwan Southern Min?

This paper investigates special tone sandhi in Taiwan Southern Min (TSM), arguing that special tone sandhi in trisyllabic adjective reduplication in TSM is due to pragmatic factor rather than phonological factor, floating tone for example. It is proposed that a floating high tone appears between the first and second syllable of the trisyllabic adjective reduplication and it leads to the special...

Variations in Kavalan Reduplication

This paper provides an analysis of the reduplicative patterns of Kavalan, an endangered Formosan plains tribe language spoken by fewer than one hundred people on the eastern coast of Taiwan. Kavalan reduplication is special in that the reduplicant takes several distinct shapes depending on the initial syllable of the base (Lee 2009). Within the framework of Optimality Theory (Prince & Smolensky...
